ARCHITEXTILES [FINAL MAJOR PROJECT]

January - May 2020

Architextiles is the idea that textile techniques are thought of and used in architecture and vice versa.

A progression from the Fabric Manipulation research and development project, Eleanor continues to explore ways in which woven pieces can be designed into the Barbara Hepworth Building at the University of Huddersfield.

Eleanor has created a series of woven textiles that have the potential to be used in an interior space. The project investigates ideas around how textiles can delineate rest and work spaces in large open plan environments with the aim to provide the staff and students at the University of Huddersfield with privacy and self-reflection areas that will help their overall wellbeing while working in these busy environments.

The project also explored the benefits of fabric being temporary, lightweight, and portable - allowing the consumer to buy more woven pieces to create a modular divider that they would be able to add or take away themselves. This enables the textiles to adapt if and when the need for their spaces changes too. In this case, the space in the Barbara Hepworth would be needed for exhibitions, open days, and final year shows.

The idea is that the pieces are created specifically for each site, in this case, the Barbara Hepworth Building, with the target market being schools, office or large interior environments that wish to quickly improve their acoustics, privacy and worker's wellbeing by providing areas for rest with the woven dividers.

The Final Major Project is split into two parts. Part 1 shows all the work completed from January to March before the university closed due to Coronavirus.

Part 2 is all the work created and completed at home which consists of a design drawing project, where Eleanor studies the structure of her woven fabric and created a series of drawings based on the initial concept of her FMP.
