Oxfam x Huddersfield University - Designer Maker Project [Jan-March 2018] 1/3
The Concept Behind It
Originally the concept behind the project with Oxfam was to upcycle old fabrics and garments from Wastesavers into something that could be used in a home for students – along with the promotion of Oxfam, upcycling and how you can still create amazing things with second hand items. This was the first thought I had, because we needed to create something that could either be sold at a festival or online and I loved the idea of making something for interiors that could be sold online for people like myself.
However, as time went on the concept changed slightly as I started speaking with Oxfam, my peers and ideas were developing.
The story behind the final product (water drop keychain) has incorporated much more than just upcycling, it can also promote Oxfam and the work they do. I looked into the unwrapped gifts you can buy from Oxfam online and created some ‘mascots’ for some of these which can be sold online. Yet these mascots are versatile and can also be sold in Oxfam shops. The concept behind these are to buy and some money goes towards the specific cause. For example the water drop goes to help Oxfam build wells and provide clean, safe water in emergency disasters. The goat on the other hand helps with farming and work. The money for that goes to help Oxfam provide equipment needed so families can make a stable living. As well as the power fist – which can help get girls education and women gain independence. But the customer still gets something out of it, a handmade and upcycled keychain.
